Während des Dienstes fühlte er sich unwohl und begab sich selbst zum Krankenhaus, wo er zusammenbrach und an Herzversagen starb.
Er hinterließ seine Frau und drei Söhne.

The officer became ill while on duty and when driving himself to hospital he collapsed and died
of heart failure in Coleraine, Co. Londonderry.
Mervyn had 24 years police service and was stationed at Portstewart.
He was survived by his wife and three sons.
